This is a summary page of many of the local sites that are either maintained by the Skywacker Club, or are nearby and flown by club members. Also some sites that are included for historical interest. The summaries will have links to take you to more detailed information about the site, if it is available.
Eagle Rock is the only site currently maintained by the Skywacker Club. Located NW of Roanoke, the mountain has launches facing both SE and NW. See Eagle Rock Site Info for flying information, and Eagle Rock History for how the site came to be.
Big Walker Mountain is the birthplace of the Skywackers, with a long and ongoing history. It is a 30 mile long NW facing ridge in beautiful country in South Western Virginia (near Pulaski/Dublin/Bland). Many long flights have begun here, which have ended as far away as New Castle and North Carolina. It is currently a private site operated by the landowner. See the current flying info at Soar Big Walker
Barry Rich has developed a new launch on Peter's Mountain (WV) down the ridge from the previous hang gliding launch. For
more info see https://sites.google.com/view/barrys-launch
It is currently

Tobacco Row Mountain is located near Lynchburg, and has been the starting point for a number of cross country flights over the flat lands to the East. It once had both NW and SE launches. The SE launch was lost when housing development closed the only viable LZs. There is also a lower SE site on the mountain, that was flown mainly by Paragliders. This has not been flown for some time, and may no longer be viable. The NW site remained in use after the SE side closed, but LZ landowner problems on the NW side closed the only viable primary LZs. See Tobacco Row History for more info. This site is not currently open nor managed by the SWVHPA.
Moore Mt is in North Carolina, near Taylorsville. Facing South, it is well known for smooth evening glass-off flights. Once a very active site, landowner problems developed and most flying ceased. It is not clear that the site is completely closed, as there are occaisional reports of flights. This site is maintained by the Buzzards Club. They can be contacted via their Google Groups BuzzardClub List
